Ministers of the Americas to Define Common Priorities to Improve Education at OAS Meeting

Ministers of Education from the countries of the Americas will meet within the framework of the Organization of American States (OAS) this Thursday, February 9 and Friday, February 10 at Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island, in Nassau, The Bahamas to define common priorities aimed at improving quality education in the region. The meeting is expected to culminate with the approval of the Inter-American Education Agenda, a landmark document aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals agreed by the United Nations in 2015.
The approval of the Inter-American Education Agenda is a milestone achievement in improving quality education in the Americas, as it codifies agreement on three concrete priorities:
Quality, inclusive, and equitable education;
Strengthening the teaching profession; and
Comprehensive early childhood care.
The inaugural session of the meeting will take place on Thursday, February 9, 2017, at 9:00 EST (14:00 GMT), and will feature the participation of the Prime Minister of The Bahamas, Perry Christie; the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro; the Minister of Education, Science and Technology of The Bahamas, Jerome Fitzgerald; and the Vice President of the World Bank for Latin America and the Caribbean, Jorge Familiar.
The theme of the meeting is “The Inter-American Education Agenda: Building alliances and advancing towards the Sustainable Development Goals.” The event will also include a Best Practice and Trade Exhibition opening on Wednesday, February 8, at 19:00 EST (0:00 GMT of Thursday, February 9).
