OAS Launches Initiative on the Role of Justice in the Protection of the Environment

  February 10, 2016

The Organization of American States (OAS) will launch on February 12 the initiative "Caring for our Common Home from the Judiciary: Guaranteeing More Rights for More People in the Americas," which aims to enhance and strengthen the role of justice in environmental protection.

The initiative is based on the idea that protecting Planet Earth is offering "More rights for more people," and that it is a common responsibility of lawmakers, parliamentarians, judges, lawyers, attorneys and, ultimately, the people. In that sense, it considers the effective implementation of laws protecting the environment as essential. The program, led by the OAS, will focus on four aspects: training judges; creating an operating model for the judiciary; involving the judiciary in the celebration of International Mother Earth Day; and developing a portal on environment rule of law in the Americas.

As part of the launch of the initiative, the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, will designate five ministers and/or presidents of courts of justice of the region as Goodwill Ambassadors for Environmental Justice in the Americas. Ministers will then participate in a dialogue on the state of environmental law in the Hemisphere.

The event that will begin at 15:00 ET (19:00 GMT) will be transmitted via webcast here.
