OAS to Train more than 600 officials from the Foreign Ministries of the Americas in Digital Diplomacy

The Organization of American States (OAS) will train more than 600 officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of its member states tomorrow starting at 10:00 EST (15:00 GMT) in the course “Digital Diplomacy: the role of emerging technologies in strengthening democracy,” which will be taught in a hybrid manner and broadcast live on the OAS webcast.


The course is coordinated by the OAS Department for Effective Public Management
within the framework of the Committee on Legal and Political Affairs, which is chaired by the Permanent Representative of Chile to the OAS, Ambassador Sebastián Kraljevich.

The course seeks to increase the capabilities of the region's foreign ministries to address the growing agenda of multilateral negotiations on digital transformation issues in the region, especially about new practices, trends, challenges and opportunities in relation to new technologies.

The course will feature the participation of recognized experts with long experience in the field, including:
- the International Rector and Dean of the School of Political Sciences, Economics and Global Affairs of the IE University of Spain, Manuel Muñiz;
- Special Ambassador for Digital Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Nele Leosk;
- the President and CEO of the Center for Democracy and Technology, Alexandra Reeve Givens, from the United States;
- the Democratic and Inclusive Governance Program Manager of the International Development Research Center (IDRC) of Canada, Sydney Lecorcq;
- the Founding Director of Digital Democracy, Elaine Ford of Peru;
- and the Director of the Democracy and Digitalization Program of International IDEA, Alberto Fernandez in Stockholm.
The main objective of the course is to increase knowledge and become familiar with the concepts to strengthen the regional agenda and regulatory frameworks, with ethical and responsible principles in the era of digital transformation.

This training responds to the mandates established by the OAS Member States in the section on strengthening public management in the Americas, of the Resolution on Strengthening Democracy of the OAS General Assembly of 2023.
