PERU TO HOST OAS FORUM ON CITIZENSHIP AND DEMOCRATIC STABILITY

  December 2, 2007

A forum exploring “A State for Full Citizenship and Democratic Stability: Perspective of Strategic Actors,” being organized by the Organization of American States (OAS) in conjunction with the government of Peru, will be held in the Peruvian capital, next Tuesday, December 4. The event will be held at Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Lima.

Seeking to promote discussion on critical issues of sustainable democracy and to examine the role of the OAS, this is the third such forum being organized by the OAS Department of Sustainable Democracy and Special Missions. It is being organized in cooperation with regional institutions, with support from the government of Canada and IDEA International.

Peru’s Minister of Defense, Alan Wagner, is scheduled to open the forum, along with OAS Secretary for Political Affairs Dante Caputo.

Among others, the forum will explore democratic stability and citizenship from the perspectives of state- and non-state actors including the media; internal mechanisms for crisis prevention and management; and the role of the OAS.
