CICAD of the OAS Brings Together 34 Commissioners from the Region to Address Micro-trafficking and other Emerging Issues

The Drug Commissioners of the Americas will come together this week at the 55th Regular Session of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the Organization of American States (OAS) to discuss issues related to micro-trafficking and other emerging themes, from April 28 to May 1 in Washington, DC.
Among the main topics to be discussed at the CICAD meeting are the trafficking of drugs in small quantities and national responses to drug markets; alternatives to incarceration for drug dependent offenders and others in conflict with the law for issues related to drugs; and the challenges and impact of the regulation of cannabis.
The delegations from OAS member states will discuss cooperation between Europe and the Americas on drug related issues; analysis and responses to synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances; dealing with the drug problem from a public health approach; and other current issues facings the commissions of the countries in the region.
The meeting will include the participation of other organizations and strategic partners such as the Pan American Health Organization, the European Commission and representatives of civil society and OAS Permanent Observer countries.
Moreover, for the second consecutive year, the CICAD meeting will be preceded by the Meeting of Civil Society which will analyze trafficking in small quantities and local responses to drug markets. This event will take place on Monday, April 28 at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC.
The 55th Session of CICAD will be chaired by the Deputy Minister for Multilateral Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Carlos Arturo Morales.
