Delegates from Member Countries to Analyze at the OAS Progress in Controlling, Manufacturing and Trafficking of Firearms

Regional experts on disarmament will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, May 6, at 10:00 EDT (14:00 GMT) the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in the Sixteenth Meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Inter-American Convention against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, and Other Related Materials.

During the event, authorities will review the status of signatures and ratifications of the Convention, its implementation and effectiveness, and national and regional efforts to mark and trace of firearms. Specific cases related to ballistic and biometric laboratories in the Dominican Republic and Ecuador will also be analyzed.

The Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the OAS, Ambassador Marco Vinicio Albuja Martinez, whose country serves as pro tempore secretariat of the Consultative Committee of the CIFTA, will deliver the welcoming remarks to the meeting, which will also feature presentations from representatives of other member countries and from the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UN-LIREC) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Approved in November 1997, CIFTA is a regional instrument for the control of the illicit manufacturing and trafficking of firearms which emphasizes the need for authorizations or licenses for the export, import and transit of firearms; and the reinforcement of control at points of export, among other things. The Convention seeks to promote and facilitate cooperation and the exchange of information and experiences between States.

The Consultative Committee of the CIFTA is made up of a representative of each State Party, in order to guarantee its implementation, promote the exchange of information, facilitate cooperation and foster training between States.
