Secretary General to Inaugurate XLI Course on International Law and 85th Meeting of the Inter-American Juridical Committee in Rio de Janeiro

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, will take part in the inauguration of the XLI Course on International Law "Dispute Resolution in International Law," and the 85th regular session of the Inter-American Juridical Committee (CJI) on Monday 4 August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The OAS Secretary General and the members of the Committee will participate in the opening session of the course on Monday. The ceremony will also feature the participation of President of the CJI, Ambassador João Clemente Baena Soares, and the OAS Secretary for Legal Affairs, Jean Michel Arrighi.

During the three week course classes will be taught in various fields related to current law and international relations. Among the professors participating will be the President of the International Criminal Court, Judge Sang-Hyun Song; Judges of the International Court of Justice, Ronny Abraham and Antonio Cançado Trindade; and the President of the Assembly of States Parties of the International Criminal Court.

The 85th meeting of the CJI will be held at the headquarters of the Committee in Rio de Janeiro, from August 4 to 8, and the agenda will focus in six themes: immunity of States and international organizations; electronic storage receipts for agricultural products: alternatives for regulating the use of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and the prevention of drug dependence; guidelines for migration management in bilateral relations; protection of personal data; law applicable to international contracts; and the protection of stateless persons.

The CJI is a consultative body to the OAS in legal matters under the Charter of the Organization and is composed of eleven jurists from member states, elected for a term of four years.
