OAS and Ecuador to organize in Guayaquil the Ninth Meeting of the Latin American and Caribbean Council for Civil Registration, Identity, and Vital Statistics

  October 22, 2012

The Organization of American States (OAS), through the Universal Civil Identity Program in the Americas, and the Government of Ecuador, will hold from October 24 to 26, the Ninth Meeting of the Latin American and Caribbean Council for Civil Registration, Identity, and Vital Statistics (CLARCIEV), which will focus on the issue of "Strengthening our Identity."

The meeting, to be held in the city of Guayaquil, will feature the participation of Civil Registry directors of 19 countries in the region, representatives of international and inter-American organizations, as well as other government officials and international experts in the field. On this occasion, they will discuss issues related to transparency, technology and innovation, and the interoperability of civil registration.

CLARCIEV is the only entity that gathers the Civil Registry directors of the Americas in order to provide a space for dialogue and mutual learning about civil identity and the modernization of civil registry institutions, among others.

According to UNICEF, the rate of registration in the region is about 10 percent in children from birth to five years old. The meeting will facilitate the exchange of best practices to achieve the goal of zero under-registration by 2015.
