STATEMENT FROM THE OAS PERMANENT COUNCIL ON BOMBINGS IN SPAIN

  March 11, 2004

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States expresses its utter condemnation of the despicable and cowardly terrorist acts perpetrated today, March 11, 2004, in Madrid, Spain, that so far have cost the lives of some two hundred citizens and wounded an even larger number.

The tragedy that Spain has experienced is mourned today by the community of nations of the Americas, which proclaim, publicly and unequivocally, their repudiation of such barbaric terrorist attacks.

The Permanent Council reiterates that terrorist acts have no justification and pose a grave threat to democratic values and to international peace and security.

The Permanent Council expresses its deepest condolences to the relatives of the victims and its unreserved and unanimous solidarity with the people and Government of Spain, and Their Majesties King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía.
