OAS, BID, CAF and World Bank Agree to Create the Inter-American System of Education
April 10, 2015
The Organization of American States (OAS), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) and the Latin American division of the World Bank today agreed to begin the process leading to the creation of an Inter-American System of Education, following a proposal by the Government of Colombia.
The agreement was formalized by the signing in Panama City, Panama, in the framework of the Seventh Summit of the Americas, of a letter of intent to “define an agenda, present initiatives according to the competencies of each entity and agree on a first report within the next 90 days.”
The letter was signed by the President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, and his Foreign Minister, María Ángela Holguín, by the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza; the President of the IDB, Luis Alberto Moreno; the Vice President of the World Bank for Latin America, Jorge Familiar; and Susana Pinilla, Representative Director of the CAF in Panama, representing CAF President Enrique García. The OAS Secretary General-elect, Luis Almagro, also attended the signing ceremony.
The objective of the future Inter-American System of Education “will be to promote the improvement in the quality of education in the Hemisphere and encourage the research and identification of effective public policies on the issue.”
Secretary General Insulza said the proposal put into action today “constitutes a great investment and we are excited about it as an organization, because we have much to do in education and many initiatives to carry out in a key area for the development of our countries.”
