OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Ecuador Publishes Preliminary Report and Recommendations for the Second Round

The Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization of American States (OAS), headed by former Vice President of Panama Isabel de Saint Malo, today published the preliminary report on the electoral process in Ecuador, which covers what has been observed since the deployment began on January 14th, until the results of the first round of the presidential election were announced.
The purpose of the report is to contribute to the strengthening of electoral processes in Ecuador and contains a series of recommendations that the Mission considers pertinent to implement for the second round, to be held on April 11th.
According to the proclamation of results published by the National Electoral Council with 100% of the votes counted, the candidates Andrés Arauz and Guillermo Lasso will compete in the second presidential round. The Mission notes that, after the notification of electoral results to political subjects, those who are dissatisfied have the possibility of filing administrative and jurisdictional appeals, provided that they have evidence of inconsistencies and irregularities and that their claims are in accordance with current law.
In this sense, the Mission calls on the electoral authorities to resolve these claims in strict accordance with the law and to comply with the electoral calendar.
The Mission will return to Ecuador to observe the second round of elections and, subsequently, will present a final report to the Permanent Council of the OAS.
