CANADA CONTRIBUTES TO MINE ACTION PROGRAM IN NICARAGUA

  January 31, 2003

The government of Canada has contributed Can$250,000 to the Comprehensive Mine Action Program in Central America, an Organization of American States initiative. The Canadian donation will help underwrite operational expenses in Nicaragua, among other purposes.

With this contribution—from the Canadian Landmine Fund—Canada is reaffirming its commitment to the Ottawa Convention as well as its leadership on collaborative initiatives for peace and democracy in the Western Hemisphere.

Ambassador Paul Durand, Canada’s Permanent Representative to the OAS, declared that "Supporting the goal of an anti-personnel landmine free hemisphere is a priority for the Canadian Government, and I sincerely believe that with a sustained commitment this goal is within our reach. I hope that the Canadian contribution will bolster the key role that the OAS continues to play in generating the political commitment to achieve the objectives of the Ottawa Convention. "

Canada is one of 17 countries that provide financial support for the OAS Mine Action Program. The others include Denmark, France, Norway, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States. Altogether, the 17 donor nations have given more than $24.5 million to the project since 1998.

The Comprehensive Mine Action Program has been operating under the purview of the OAS Unit for the Promotion of Democracy since 1995. Its activities, among other things, support mine-clearing operations in five countries: Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Peru.
