OAS Secretary General Calls on Indigenous Groups to Accept Dialogue with Government of Panama

  February 4, 2012

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza, concerned about the situation in the Republic of Panama, due to the closing of the Inter-American Way-- measure of protest by indigenous groups in Ngäbe Buglém- requests indigenous leaders to accept the call for dialogue from the Government of Panama.

"President Ricardo Martinelli has showed his willingness to dialogue to avoid maintaining a situation of tension," said the Secretary General, and insisted on the need to open "a respectful dialogue to achieve peace that the people of Panama wish for and deserve."

Insulza called for having awareness that "the material and economic losses, product of this situation, harm the lives of thousands of Panamanian families of all levels, which far from sustaining a social vindication could cause irreparable harm."

"I believe it is possible and necessary to follow this road, so that Panamanians may seek, with wisdom and prudence, a balanced exit and put to an end the climate of confrontation, which harms the country and closes a path for communication that is vital to our region," he said.

Secretary General Insulza concluded by making a call "to immediately retake the way of dialogue.
