OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Guatemala Supports Efforts of the TSE to Obtain Official Results As Soon As Possible

  June 26, 2019

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS/EOM) remains in Guatemala to accompany the post-election process with a team of five specialists who will remain in the country until this phase ends.

The OAS/EOM considers it essential that the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) makes all necessary efforts to provide, as soon as possible, the final results of the June 16 elections. In this regard, the Mission considers it important that the investigation initiated today by the Public Ministry does not interfere with the final vote count.

The Mission regrets the climate of confusion that has arisen after the elections. However, the Mission reiterates that the problems that have occurred do not alter the will of the citizens as expressed at the polls. The preliminary results of the presidential elections published by the TSE coincide with the information gathered by the Mission and with the data provided by Mirador Electoral.

The Mission reiterates its rejection of unfounded allegations of fraud and any effort to hinder the consolidation of results.

As indicated by the Mission in its preliminary report, this electoral process requires improvements in numerous aspects ahead of the August 11 elections. These improvements are urgent and possible.
