OAS Secretariat for Strengthening Democracy (SSD) Facilitated Coordination of 2nd Meeting of Voluntary Group of the Inter-American Democratic Charter

The Secretariat for Strengthening Democracy (SSD) of the Organization of American States (OAS) facilitated the coordination of the second meeting of the Voluntary Group of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, created in response to the mandate of resolution AG/RES. 3004 (LIII-O/23) STRENGTHENING DEMOCRACY..
The group, which has the support of 26 member states and is open to participation, aims to promote dialogue, horizontal cooperation, and the exchange of best practices, as well as identify opportunities within the principles of the OAS Charter and of the Inter-American Democratic Charter to strengthen the democracies of the region.
During the second meeting, which was held at OAS headquarters, 15 delegations participated who selected their authorities, chose the group's official name and commented on its work plan.
The representatives of the member states adopted the following agreements: 1) The Voluntary Group must be led by a member state. Ambassador Francisco Mora, Permanent Representative of the United States to the OAS, assumed the chairmanship of the Voluntary Group for the follow-up of the Inter-American Democratic Charter for a period of six months. 2) The official name of the group is “Voluntary Group for the Follow-up of the Inter-American Democratic Charter.” 3) The Secretariat for Strengthening Democracy will circulate a draft work plan so that the missions analyze it, reach a consensus, and send their comments by January 11, 2024. 4) Holding of the third meeting of the Voluntary Group on January 19, 2024.
Also, the Director of the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights, Jose Thompson, made a presentation in which he advocated for civic education for the strengthening of democracy in the region. He presented concrete recommendations for the Voluntary Group to consider when reaching a consensus on approving the next work plan.
