  October 5, 2021

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, today appointed the Brazilian Fernando Lottenberg to the position of OAS Commissioner to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism, a recently created position. As it exists in the European Union, Canada and the United States, the Commissioner's fundamental responsibility will be to join forces in the Western Hemisphere to confront the scourge of discrimination and hatred.

"Promoting the adoption and implementation in the region of the definition of anti-Semitism adopted by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, in coordination with the General Secretariat, will be one of the main tasks of Commissioner Lottenberg," said Secretary General Almagro. “His prestige and his track record indicate that he will carry them out successfully. With my best wishes, the Commissioner has my full support and commitment,” he added.

Lottenberg has been President of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Brazil and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Latin American and Latino Affairs of the American Jewish Committee. A prestigious constitutional lawyer, his voice is recognized throughout the Americas as an active defender of democracy and human rights.
