OAS Assistant Secretary General Discusses Migration, Education, Technology and Internet Access during Seventh Summit of the Americas

The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, discussed migration, education and technology and internet access with leaders from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Elsevier Foundation and Google, respectively, in the context of the Seventh Summit of the Americas, held in Panama.

Acknowledging the critical linkage between migration and development, Ambassador Ramdin agreed with the Director General of the IOM, William Lacy Swing, to deepen the partnership between the two organizations and pledged to facilitate closer collaboration on the migratory challenges within the Caribbean region. The two senior officials spoke of working toward a hemispheric summit on the issue of migration—an issue which has been at the top of the Inter-American agenda, and the need to broaden support to address the migratory challenges between Haiti and the Dominican Republic and the immigration needs of Central American children and youth.

Assistant Secretary Ramdin also discussed the Inter-American agenda in the area of technology and information and communication technologies (ICTs) with Vinton Cerf, Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist for Google, stressing the need to continue to empower the people of Latin America and the Caribbean through greater access to the internet and greater connectivity. Ambassador Ramdin thanked Google officials for their support for the annual OAS youth conference as well as the annual charity event Spirit of the Americas. He pledged his support for the growing partnership between the OAS and Google and stressed the importance of continuing the relationship with the new OAS authorities.

In the area of education, Assistant Secretary General Ramdin and the Chairman of Elsevier Foundation, YS Chi, discussed the need to help young professionals and educational institutions anticipate labor market changes and develop the skills the youth will need for the future. The two officials also discussed innovative ways to help governments modernize the education sector. Ambassador Ramdin emphasized the importance of assisting OAS member states understand the critical role of education in meeting evolving demands of the labor market.
