OAS Begins Project on Social Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution in Guatemala

  April 24, 2012

The Organization of American States (OAS) today launches a program in support of the prevention, management and resolution of social conflicts in Guatemala, which will begin a training workshop for officials from the Vice-Ministry of Community Support in the Ministry of the Interior, to be held from April 24 to 26 in the headquarters of the Ministry in Guatemala City.

The main objective of the course is to strengthen the institutional capability of the Ministry to deal with social unrest and its specific problems, in particular those related to citizen insecurity within communities and neighborhoods. The course seeks to help participants formulate more effective and integral government responses, promoting habits of respect for diversity and collaborative and inclusive solutions.

The participants will learn practical tools and skills to analyze conflicts in a strategic way, to develop more constructive communication and to serve as mediators and facilitators in the resolution and/or transformation of disagreements.

This course is the first of three workshops planned as part of the program, which will also include officials from the various parts of the Interior Ministry as well as the Departmental Governors from throughout the country.

This initiative has been developed within the support framework of the Department of Democratic Sustainability and Special Missions (DDSSM) of the Secretariat of Political Affairs of the General Secretariat of the OAS to the Guatemalan government, and is financed by the Canadian government.
