OAS Electoral Observation Mission to the Dominican Republic Begins Visit

The Head of the Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) to the Dominican Republic, former Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez, will begin a visit to the country Wednesday, in anticipation of the first round of the presidential elections on May 20.
In the framework of the EOM/OAS, Vázquez will meet with various political, electoral and governmental authorities, as well as representatives of the international community and the church. Beginning Wednesday, a group of observers will begin its work to monitor the development of the electoral process in the 31 provinces and the national district.
The EOM/OAS will observe the elections according to its standardized methodology that is used in all the countries to which it is invited. The group will observe various aspects of electoral organization, including legal and technical aspects, gender participation, and campaign financing among other areas.
The former President of Uruguay will be accompanied on his visit by Pablo Gutierrez, Director of the OAS Department of Electoral Cooperation and Observation, David Alvarez Veloso, Deputy Chief of the electoral observation mission in the Dominican Republic, and Karen Bozicovich, specialist in the Department of Democratic Sustainability.
