OAS ART GROUP STAGES FIFTH ANNUAL EXHIBITION

  August 12, 2003

The Art Group of the Organization of American States opened its fifth annual exhibition Monday evening, at OAS Headquarters in Washington, DC.

Spotlighting artistic creations by OAS staff members and diplomats accredited to the Organization and to the White House, the exhibition includes works by such experienced artists as Ecuadorian Gabriel Gross, whose paintings have just been on exhibition in Denmark and Spain; Chilean Elba Molina and Guatemalan René Lionel Nájera, among others.

In declaring the exhibition open, OAS Staff Association President René Gutiérrez stressed that the Art Group this year placed special emphasis on girl artists whose entry, sponsored by the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM), explores the theme “The Accomplishments of Women,” to mark the 75th anniversary of the OAS commission. “There is no question that the girls were using this mural to highlight the achievements of women in the Americas,” noted Gutiérrez as he unveiled the piece.

CIM Executive Secretary Carmen Lomellin meanwhile hailed the young artists, and announced that posters will be produced from the mural and will be distributed at the Second Meeting of Women Ministers and Senior Authorities responsible for women’s policies, to be held at OAS Headquarters next April.

Sponsored by the OAS’ Art Museum of the Americas, the OAS Office of Protocol, CIM and the Columbus Memorial Library, the exhibition explores a variety of themes—from regional to religious to landscape—executed on oil, acrylic, water colors, and black and white photography.

The artistic display remains open to the public until Friday, August 22.
