OAS PERMANENT COUNCIL PAYS HOMAGE TO FORMER HONDURAN PRESIDENT

  August 27, 2003

The Organization of American States>(OAS) Permanent Council paid homage today to former Honduran president Carlos Roberto Reina. The member state ambassadors observed a minute of silence and eulogized the former leader who died last week in Tegucigalpa.

Permanent Council Chairman Ambassador Raymond Valcin of Haiti led the tributes, underscoring Reina’s contribution to development in his country as well as Central America and the Hemisphere at large.

Thanking the Council, Honduran Permanent Representative to the OAS Ambassador Salvador Rodezno recalled Reina’s illustrious career, noting his well-recognized statesmanship and intellectual contributions.

Besides leading his nation, Reina’s distinctions include serving as a judge and Chairman of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and President of the Central American Parliament. Rodezno noted that President Reina used his positions to advance human rights in Central American and democracy in his own country.
