"Competitiveness is Crucial" says OAS Assistant Secretary General at Puerto Rico Summit
April 30, 2014
The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, emphasized the "crucial" importance of competitiveness to the countries of the region, in his keynote address to the Annual Competitiveness Summit in Puerto Rico this week.
"The growth of the middle class and middle income countries in the Americas, is making the issue of competitiveness a priority matter" said Ambassador Ramdin, who added that many countries in the hemisphere have reached a crossroads. "On one hand, we can continue with business and usual and run the risk of stagnant economies. On the other hand, there is potential and opportunity. But fundamental change is required to take advantage of new opportunities. Our nations must become more competitive," said Ramdin.
"We cannot use the same old business models and concepts and expect to remain relevant or succeed. We cannot use an education syllabus of 15 years ago and expect to produce a generation that can compete globally. We cannot attract new investment, if our framework and policies are outdated," added Assistant Secretary General Ramdin.
Ramdin pointed to common challenges facing many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean including high debt, failing infrastructure and the absence of an economic diversification plan. He urged political and non-political stakeholders to work together to address these issues.
The senior OAS official also encouraged collaboration and discussion of the issue during the Americas Competitiveness Forum, which will be co-hosted by the Government of Trinidad & Tobago this October.
