OAS Secretary General Met with President of Guatemala

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, was received today by the President of Guatemala, Otto Pérez Molina, at the Presidential Residence in the Guatemalan capital, in a meeting attended by Foreign Minister Fernando Carrera.

During the meeting, the Guatemalan leader and the chief representative of the OAS discussed the cooperation between Guatemala and the Organization, and the current political context in the Hemisphere, with particular emphasis on the latest events in Central America. Moreover, they talked about the progress made in the discussion on the issue of drugs at the hemispheric level and the preparations for the Special General Assembly of the Organization to be hosted by Guatemala on September 19. The hemispheric meeting will focus on the Worldwide Drug Problem in the Americas and has as its objective to comply with the provisions of the "Declaration of Antigua Guatemala: For a Comprehensive Policy against the World Drug Problem in the Americas.” In addition, the two authorities discussed the upcoming Regular General Assembly of the OAS, to be held from June 3 to 5 in Asunción, Paraguay, under the theme “Development with Social Inclusion;” the Summit of the Americas which will take place in 2015 in Panama; and the debate surrounding the “Strategic Vision of the OAS,” begun by Secretary General Insulza and which has as its objective the definition and delimitation of the issues on which the Organization should focus its attention in the future.

Secretary General Insulza also met in Guatemala City with the Deputy Minister for Prevention of Violence and Crime of the Ministry of the Interior of Guatemala, Arkel Benítez, who presented him with the document, “National Policy on the Prevention of Violence and Crime – Citizen Security and Pacific Coexistence 2014-2034,” which the government will launch next Tuesday.

During his visit to Guatemala, the OAS Secretary General also participated, together with President Pérez Molina, in the presentation of the collaborative competition “The Voice of the Youth of the Hemisphere, preventing and minimizing the damage done by drugs.”

The competition is a joint initiative by the OAS General Secretariat and the Government of Guatemala to bring about a creative and complementary exchange in which the youth of the Americas can compete with concrete proposals in the search for new approaches to the worldwide problem of drugs in the Americas.
