The OAS and INMETRO of Brazil Join Forces to Ensure Safe Consumption of Goods and Services and Promote Regional Cooperation on Metrology
June 28, 2012
The Organization of American States (OAS) and the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology of the Federative Republic of Brazil (INMETRO), signed this week a cooperation agreement to establish a regulatory framework for joint mechanisms and actions to help promote and encourage the circulation of safe consumer goods and services, as well as to enhance cooperation for promoting and strengthening metrology systems.
Under the agreement, the parties will continue to contribute to strengthening social development, transparency, inclusion and participation by the region’s consumers. The agreement formalized the close relationship that in recent years has been consolidated within the framework of the Consumer Safety and Health Network and the Consumer -American Metrology System (SIM). These initiatives are supported by the OAS Executive Secretariat for Integral Development (SEDI) and have the active participation of INMETRO.
The agreement was signed within the framework of the meeting of the "Consumer Safety and Health Inter-ministerial Working Group - Brazil" held during the Consumer Safety and Health International Seminar organized by the government of Brazil on June 27 and 28, 2012, in Brasilia. INMETRO’s President, João da Jornada Alziro Herz, signed on behalf of his institution and the Executive Secretary for Integral Development, Mr. Jorge Saggiante, on behalf of the OAS.
The Consumer Safety and Health Network, coordinated by the OAS Department of Social Development and Employment, is the first Inter-American effort to contribute to the integration and dissemination of consumer product safety practices in the region with the goal of contributing to the effective exercise of democracy, and to promote welfare and health through free and informed choices of safe consumer goods and services. The SIM brings together national metrology agencies from OAS Member States to promote Inter-American cooperation on metrology for the promotion of integrated metrology infrastructure in the Americas, with traceability and recognition at a global level to ensure the quality of products, processes and services; thereby, facilitating national and international trade. The Office of Science, Technology and Innovation of the OAS Department of Economic Development, Trade and Tourism is a founding member of the SIM and part of its Board of Directors.
