LANDMINE CLEARING IN GUATEMALA TO CONTINUE IN SPITE OF HURRICANE STAN

  October 19, 2005

The Organization of the American States (OAS) and the Guatemalan government will continue landmine-clearing operations in that country in spite of the damages caused by Hurricane Stan, which recently devastated parts of Central America. The operations will continue as planned, according to the OAS Mine Action Program field report on Guatemala.

Even though Stan affected the geographical area where landmine eradication is carried out, the hurricane did not ravage specific areas that are scheduled to be cleared during the last months of this year. In the southern zones of Suchitepequez and Escuintla, municipalities of Patulul and Chicacao are two areas where operations will begin in the next few days.

The mine-clearing activities were temporarily suspended so that all OAS mine-clearing program personnel – Voluntary Fire Department, Army and former members of the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unit— could support efforts to evacuate the population affected by the hurricane and the reconstruction of that country’s main communication routes.

The OAS, in collaboration with Guatemala’s Executive Coordinating Unit, the main entity in charge of mine-clearing and destruction of unexploded ordnance, recently traveled to survey the situation caused by the hurricane.

The OAS, which has provided technical support to the Guatemalan government through its Mine Action program since 1988, aims to conclude its operations at the end of this year. The mines and unexploded ordnance in Guatemala were the result of the approximately four decades of internal conflict that took place in that country.
