OAS Secretary General Welcomes Passing of Immigration Reform in the U.S. Senate
June 28, 2013
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, expressed his satisfaction on the passing in the U.S. Senate of the immigration reform bill.
The head of the hemispheric organization highlighted that this bill “is a fundamental step towards the possibility of a more dignified life for millions of immigrants already established in this country, in search of better horizons, which would furthermore maximize the benefits of migration both for sending and receiving societies.”
Secretary General Insulza said that “the bipartisan character of the Senate vote allows for some hope that the bill could also be passed by the House of Representatives, giving birth to the largest reform to immigration legislation in several decades.” This agreement, he added, “confirms that with dialogue mechanisms and the legitimacy of democracy we can address controversial issues such as immigration, and find solutions that are both concrete and approved by consensus”.
“Despite the fact that there is still a long way until final approval of immigration reform, a great step forward was taken yesterday”, said the Secretary General.
