The Netherlands to Contribute More than 1.5 million dollars to the OAS Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia
July 6, 2010
The Government of the Netherlands, through its Ministry for Development Cooperation, today pledged up to 1.55 million dollars in contributions to the Organization of American States (OAS) Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia (MAPP/OAS), which seeks to assist the Government of Colombia in its efforts to achieve its Peace Policy goals, including the verification and monitoring of agreements and assisting victims of violence.
The Arrangement between the Netherlands Minister for Development Cooperation and the OAS was signed at the Organization’s headquarters in Washington, DC, by OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza and the Ambassador of the Netherlands to the United States and Permanent Representative to the OAS, Renée Jones-Bos.
Secretary General Insulza highlighted the achievements of the MAPP/OAS in helping to immobilize, disarm and verify the disarmament of illegal armed groups in the South American nation, and thanked the Government of the Netherlands for their continued support in this process, calling it one of the program’s “big donors.”
“This could not have been done without the support of the Government of the Netherlands,” Secretary General Insulza said, “and that is something we have to recognize.”
The topmost representative of the hemispheric organization added that though “we still have a lot of challenges in Colombia and violence is still there,” the problem of illegal armed groups has become “more of a criminal problem than a political one.”
For her part, Ambassador Jones-Bos congratulated the Organization for its efforts and the progress it has helped achieve.
“We’ve been involved for a long time in this process,” Jones-Bos said, “and we think it’s very productive and important. We look forward to continue our cooperation with the OAS.”
The Arrangement signed stipulates that the contribution of the Netherlands to the OAS project will not exceed 1.55 million dollars, and funds payable will be transferred in installments, beginning with a first installment of 750,000 dollars. The project will be completed by April 30, 2011.
