OAS Secretary General Welcomes Developments in Cuba
July 8, 2010
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, said he “welcomed the decision of the Cuban government to free 52 prisoners” from different jails in that country, as well as the decision of Guillermo Fariñas to end his fast.
Insulza said the decision by the Cuban authorities “is a positive step that opens up the possibility for change in the internal climate of the island and offers hope that points for dialogue among Cubans are being found.”
The OAS Secretary General congratulated the Cuban ecclesiastical authorities for the role they played in the outcome of the conversations between Cuban President Raúl Castro and the Archbishop of Havanna, Cardenal Jaime Ortega. Similarly, he thanked the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Miguel Angel Moratinos, for his decision to strengthen with his presence the conclusion of that successful process.
