OAS to Observe the General Elections in Honduras

  July 22, 2013

The Secretary General of the Organization of the American States, responding to a formal invitation by the Government of Honduras, will deploy an Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) to accompany the next general elections that will be held on November 24th in the Central American country.

To head the Mission, the Secretary General of the Organization, José Miguel Insulza, has designated the former Chilean Minister Enrique Correa. Correa served as Head of the EOM of the OAS in Honduras during the primary elections of 2012, as well as the OAS Missions in Ecuador during the electoral processes of 2007, 2008, and 2009. He also led Electoral Oversight Missions in Colombia in 2010.

As part of the observation activities of the Mission, and at the express request of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of Honduras, the EOM/OAS accompanied between June 9 and July 5 in Tegucigalpa the registration process for candidacies to participate in the November elections.

The Chief of Mission will make his first visit to Honduras during the second half of August. During his stay in the country, Correa will be meeting with the different candidates, different electoral, governmental and political authorities, as well as representatives of the national and international community.

The Mission will continue to follow the development of the electoral process ahead of the general elections and as part of that, plans to deploy observers in much of the country, in order to learn about both the administration and organization of the elections as well as the political campaign.
