OAS Secretary General Concerned about Trapped Miners in Chile

  August 10, 2010

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today expressed deep concern for the situation of 33 Chilean miners trapped in the San José mine, in the northern part of the country.

“This tragedy has united the Government, all political sectors and the people of Chile around the efforts to rescue these fellow citizens,” the OAS Secretary General said.

“I sincerely hope that these efforts and solidarity will prevail until an outcome is reached for the good of the miners, their families and the country as a whole,” he added.

By orders of Secretary General Insulza, his cabinet held phone conversations with the Chilean Minister of Mining, Laurence Golborne Riveros, to find out what technical requirements are needed to optimize the rescue efforts and to offer the collaboration of the General Secretariat in whatever is necessary.
