OAS Secretary General Applauds Resumption of Relations between Colombia and Venezuela

  August 11, 2010

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, applauded the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Colombia and Venezuela reached by their respective presidents, Juan Manuel Santos and Hugo Chávez.

The topmost representative of the hemispheric organization said the decision “constitutes an encouraging sign of political will to open talks of rapprochement between two sister countries that have contributed so much to the history of peace in our continent.”

The OAS Secretary General also said he trusted that the spirit of true cooperation President Santos and President Chávez have shown will hold firm and even grow, and he emphasized that “this is the determining factor in the goal of completely normalizing relations between these two sister countries: they are two peoples joined by history and geography and by many other bonds that must be unbreakable.”
