OAS Secretary General condemns the killing of 72 migrants in Mexico
August 27, 2010
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, strongly condemned the murders in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas and reiterated the need to coordinate a collaborative approach to fight transnational crime.
The head of the hemispheric institution deplored the brutal murder of 72 undocumented migrants from various countries of the region at the hands of criminal gangs, noting that "this tragic episode reflects the confluence of two phenomena that affect the development of Latin-American countries and their democratic system: the action of organized crime and the vulnerability of many of our migrant compatriots, who are in search of a better future"
Secretary General Insulza also said he hopes that "this collective crime is resolved and I am confident that the Mexican government will make every effort to accomplish this". "All governments in the region must work together to find coordinated methods to confront the harmful activities of transnational crime,” he added.
