OAS TO TRAIN ARGENTINEAN AND URUGUAYAN PEACE-KEEPING FORCES ON PREVENTING HUMAN TRAFFICKING
September 25, 2009
The Organization of American States (OAS), through its Department of Public Security of the Secretary for Multidimensional Security, will train peace-keeping forces from Argentina and Uruguay on prevention of human trafficking and protection of victims. The training, organized with the financial support from the Government of Canada, will take place September 28 – 29 in Montevideo, Uruguay and October 1-2 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Both events will take place within the Framework of the “Training Program on the Prevention and Protection of Victims of Trafficking in Persons for the UN Peace-Keeping Forces”. The OAS Department of Public Security has previously organized similar programs in Uruguay, Guatemala, Peru, Chile and Argentina, with participation of representatives from El Salvador, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Bolivia and Ecuador.
These seminars are addressed to personnel from the armed and other security forces that have participated, or are currently participating in United Nations peace-keeping missions. The goal is to provide training and raise awareness in prevention, identification and assistance to the victims of human trafficking, as well as on gender and human rights issues. Organizers expect around 40 lecturers and other ministry and security forces personnel, who are active in the peace-keeping missions, to participate in the training courses.
