  October 1, 2010

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, visited the President of the Republic of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, in an extensive meeting held today at the Carondelet Presidential Palace. The Foreign Minister of Ecuador, Ricardo Patiño, was also in attendance.

At the meeting, President Correa detailed Thursday’s events, which brought Ecuador and its President to the center of the world’s attention. Visibly affected by the deaths caused during the incidents, the Ecuadorean leader expressed his gratitude for the support received from the international community, as well as the resolution passed by the OAS in support of the Constitutional Government. President Correa also valued the prompt visit of Secretary General Insulza.

The head of the hemispheric organization transmitted to President Correa the support and solidarity of the OAS towards his Government, and congratulated him on “the leadership shown in resolving an extremely tense situation.” Secretary General Insulza also praised “the civic demonstration by the Ecuadorean people who peacefully and en masse rejected the coup d’etat, which constitutes an example to all of us of how all democrats are compelled to defend democracy with all our strength.”
