OAS WINS THE 2008 GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT MARKETPLACE GRANT
September 26, 2008
Organization of American States (OAS) Department of Sustainable Development (OAS/DSD), in partnership with the Paraguayan Environmental Law and Economics Institute (IDEA), received the crystal award in the 2008 Global Development Marketplace: Sustainable Agriculture for Development. The award ceremony took place Friday, September 26, 2008 at the World Bank’s headquarters in Washington, DC.
The program “Payment for Ecosystem Services and Sustainable Agriculture” was one of the 22 winners of the 100 finalists—chosen from 1,800 applications—participating in this year’s competition. The winners will receive grants of up to US$200,000 to be used towards the project.
The objective of the project is to improve the socio-economic well being of 500 households while protecting and improving the ecosystem service capacity by implementing a menu of agro-forestry practices combined with a scheme of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES). The project will target three pilot sites located in the Department of San Pedro, which includes a portion of the Bosque Atlántico del Alto Paraná (BAAP) along with other sensitive ecosystems.
The Development Marketplace is a competitive grant program that identifies and funds innovative, early stage development projects with high potential for development impact and replication. The program is administered by the World Bank and funded by various partners, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Global Environment Facility (GEF), GTZ, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
