OAS Secretary General Expresses his Gratitude to Saint Kitts and Nevis for Award in Education

  October 2, 2013

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today sent a letter expressing his gratitude to the Minister of Education and Information of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Nigel Carty, for the award that the government official recently granted to the hemispheric institution for the support it provided in the area of education.

“We are deeply honored and appreciative of the recognition of the work of the OAS as a partner in the advancement of education in the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Education or, more specifically, human development is critical for the integral development of the countries in the Hemisphere. It is therefore an important pillar of the Organization's work,” the OAS Secretary General stated in his letter.

The head of the OAS emphasized that an educated population is a prerequisite for sustainable development, which, in turn, contributes to another important pillar of the work of the OAS and “that is the strengthening and promotion of democracy in the Hemisphere.” “I therefore want to assure you that the OAS would continue to accompany the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis in its development efforts and would remain a valued partner for the advancement of education in the country,” he added.

The OAS was honored recently by the Ministry of Education and Information of Saint Kitts and Nevis with the "Partners in Education" Award for the support the hemispheric organization has been providing to the Caribbean country's education system over the last three decades.

During the celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the independence of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Minister Carty said that the award is the result of an evaluation of the assistance his country has received to advance in the area of education. “As we move forward as an Independent Nation, taking a retrospective look of the last 30 years, it is our sincere desire to build on the beneficial relationship that we have had with a true partner, the Organization of American States,” he added.
