Secretary General Celebrates Favorable Reception to the OAS Mission in Paraguay

  October 26, 2012

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today thanked the favorable reception provided to the OAS Special Mission by all political and social sectors in Paraguay. The main purpose of the OAS Special Mission in Paraguay is to promote an internal dialogue process to strengthen democracy in this South American nation.

Insulza praised the central purpose of the Mission, which in the first stage, aims to open channels of dialogue to help bring together the differences which separate the leading political stakeholders. He explained that in the second stage, the Mission will be led by the former President of Costa Rica and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Óscar Arias, who will accompany the electoral process which will culminate on April 21, 2013. In addition to this, he said that the OAS is more than willing to collaborate with other institutions that might be invited to follow the presidential elections next year.

On the issue of decisions adopted by other regional bodies regarding the Paraguayan political situation, Insulza added that the OAS does not comment, nor makes assessments, and that, on the contrary, it observes them with the same respect the OAS requests for its decisions.
