The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today added 41 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to the list of non-governmental entities allowed to take part in the activities of the Organization, a list that so far includes 308.
The newly recognized CSOs come from 16 countries of the hemisphere, and their participation was recommended to the Permanent Council by the Committee on Inter-American Summits Management and Civil Society Participation in OAS Activities.
All CSOs recognized by the OAS have the right to attend meetings of the General Assembly, the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI), and other specific Conferences of the OAS. They also have the right to present and receive written documents and contribute to the elaboration of the agenda, among other things.
Participation of CSOs in the activities of the OAS was formally regulated in 1999. To apply for registration, CSOs must send a letter to the OAS General Secretariat fulfilling certain requirements.
