OAS, IFE of Mexico and IDEA Organize Fifth Inter-American Electoral Seminar
November 27, 2012
The Organization of American States (OAS), in collaboration with the Federal Electoral Institute of Mexico (IFE) and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is holding this week in Mexico City the Fifth Inter-American Electoral Seminar, which seeks to promote improvements in the organization and administration of electoral processes and systems in the hemisphere.
28 representatives from 22 OAS Member States are taking part in the event, which concludes on Friday, and is focused on two main topics: "Overseas voting: challenges and realities" and "The political participation of women: gender quotas and projects developed by Electoral Management Bodies to promote female participation."
During the inauguration of the seminar on Monday, Betilde Muñoz-Pogossian, the Acting Director of the OAS Department for Electoral Cooperation and Observation (DECO) spoke about the importance to the organization of such activities, through which 170 officials from 33 electoral bodies of the 35 OAS Member States have received training.
She also explained that both issues "highlight the importance that the region be attentive to developments that have taken place in several countries to strengthen the full exercise of the political rights of citizens, thus generating more inclusive democracies."
For his part, IFE President Leonardo Valdés said that the institution he represents "is fully convinced of the importance of international cooperation, as sharing experiences can improve practices that strengthen democracies in the countries of the hemisphere."
