The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Albert Ramdin, visited Guyana this week and held meetings with a series of officials in the OAS Member State.
The high-ranking OAS official and his delegation met with the Acting Secretary General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Lolita Applewaithe, to discuss OAS-CARICOM relations, and briefed her on political developments in Haiti, ahead of that country's presidential run-off and legislative elections of March 20, 2011. “The Caribbean Community’s views on Haiti have an impact on the discussions taking place in the Western Hemisphere. It is important to continue meaningful collaboration on the issue," Ramdin said.
During his brief visit to Guyana, the OAS Assistant Secretary General also met with members of Guyana's international community, the private sector, officials from all three major political parties, and other stakeholders in the country. "Guyana plays an important role in the hemisphere because of its geographic positioning and engagement with both CARICOM and South America," the OAS official stated.
Presidential elections are due in Guyana later this year, and according to this, the OAS official said, "In 2006 the people of Guyana went to the polls in a climate of democracy. Despite challenges there was largely an atmosphere of stability and peace. Guyana has continued to make progress, so I am hopeful that a similar atmosphere will prevail this year."
