The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today heard the annual report from the Board of External Auditors on the year 2010, during a regular session of the Council at Organization headquarters.
The President of the Board of Auditors, James L. Millette, presented to the Permanent Council the report’s most significant details, which determine that “the OAS faces a continuing challenge to address a funding shortfall between projected quotas and approved Regular Fund expenditures.” It adds that “cost pressures continue.”
The report presents a series of recommendations to the Organization, and highlights the search for new revenue for the Regular Fund, the expansion of the reserve fund, the definition of a strategic plan on the management of real estate, and the renewal of administrative and managerial reforms.
The Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, said that, in light of the report, it is necessary for Member States to address issues such as a rise in costs and the excessive number of mandates assigned to the Organization. “Some things we do today we have to stop doing, or at least, stop doing them with the Regular Fund,” he said.
The complete report by the Board of External Auditors is available here.
