Statement by the OAS Secretary General on World Press Freedom Day
May 5, 2011
Freedom of the Press is one of the fundamental pillars of democracy, and therefore so is the existence of free and diverse media organizations, as well as freedom of expression as a governing principle of the democratic system.
From this perspective, social media, as the main depositaries of citizens’ right to information, play a key role in the functioning of a full democracy, because a free, strong and dynamic press guarantees development and the right balance between public powers and the interests of citizens.
For this to become a reality, it is essential for the press to be able to work freely and be treated with the full respect and recognition accorded other public powers. Unfortunately, freedom of the press is not always respected, and many times the truth isn’t revealed to the public and violence is used to eliminate journalists.
That is why on this day, besides welcoming freedom of expression, I want to remember all of the journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession, trying to give a voice to the voiceless and in many cases acting as anonymous heroes.
With an awareness of the importance of the role of the media, and while remembering the thousands of journalists in the world who are persecuted and killed for reporting on the truth, let’s continue to work together to defend their freedom, because it will also make all of us more free.
