Quality Infrastructure Institutions Discuss Energy Efficiency in Workshop Co-organized by OAS
May 6, 2011
More than 40 officials and representatives from Quality Infrastructure institutions participated in a workshop co-organized by the Organization of American States (OAS) in Petropolis, Brazil, in which they discussed the needs and challenges the different Quality Infrastructure institutions in the region face in matters of energy efficiency and renewable energy in the areas of metrology, accreditation, standards, certification, and evaluation of compliance.
Titled, “Challenges of Quality Infrastructure Institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean in energy efficiency and renewable energy,” the event was held in the Brazilian city of Petrópolis from May 3 to 6, and was funded by the German government with the support of the hemispheric Organization, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) of Germany, and the National Metrology Institute, Normalização e Qualidade Industrial (INMETRO) of Brazil.
The debate defined the work priority areas and the guidelines of a regional cooperation program to promote sensitization and improvement of technical capacities of Quality Infrastructure institutions in the area of renewable energy. The program will be elaborated by the PTB with the support of the OAS Office of Science, Technology, and Innovation.
Participants in the event included representatives of diverse national and international Quality Infrastructure institutions from the region, as well as international experts and representatives from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), the Inter-American Metrology System (SIM), the Pan American Standards Commission (COPANT), and the Inter-American Accreditation Cooperation (IAAC).
Quality Infrastructure allows products and services for sale in markets to be safe and of better quality, and that these attributes be recognized internationally. It is made up of public and private institutions that provide the necessary services to guarantee quality and must be supported by a regulatory framework that promotes its proper functioning. Quality Infrastructure is fundamental in promoting competitiveness, innovation, access to markets, and consumer protection, becoming a precondition for sustainable economic development.
