OAS and UNO Organize Course on Dialogue and Mediation for Central America and Dominican Republic

  July 11, 2011

The first sub-regional course on “Design and Implementation of Processes of Dialogue and Mediation,” co-organized by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations Organization (UNO) began today in Guatemala City with the participation of more than 20 government officials from state ministries and agencies in charge of handling or following up on the political, social and economic problems of six Central American countries and the Dominican Republic.

The Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, recalled that the organization’s efforts in this area are oriented towards “strengthening initiatives aimed at education for peace, forming social values and practices that seek to resolve conflicts of a political, economic or social nature through dialogue, respect for differences and cooperation.”

The main objective of the course is to strengthen the institutional capabilities of the OAS Member States to provide effective answers to social problems and promote a culture of respect, tolerance and harmony. It is hoped that participants will acquire practical tools and competencies for the analysis, identification of techniques and design of processes of dialogue and mediation.

This initiative is coordinated by the OAS Department of Democratic Sustainability and Special Missions (DDSSM) in the Organization’s Secretariat for Political Affairs as part of its efforts to promote and strengthen the handling of dissent within the Rule of Law, respect for human rights, and while contributing to strengthen a democratic culture in the region.

The course, “Design and Implementation of Processes of Dialogue and Mediation,” is being held from July 11 to 13, 2011, in Guatemala City. This initiative relies on the financial support of the Government of Canada.
