  October 6, 2011

The Organization of American States (OAS) today sent the first group of international members of the Electoral Accompaniment Mission to Managua, Nicaragua, in preparation for the General Elections to be held on November 6. Soon after their arrival in the country, the group will start contacting the authorities of the Supreme Electoral Council and will cover the 15 departments and 2 autonomous regions to verify compliance with the electoral calendar.

Next week, the Chief of Mission appointed by OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, Dante Caputo, will make a preliminary visit, during which he will hold meetings with national government authorities, presidential candidates, and representatives of the Supreme Electoral Council, as well as other stakeholders in the political process.

The OAS Mission will accompany the Nicaraguan General Elections by applying the same methodology used in all its missions throughout the region. Upon completion of the process, Mr. Caputo, a former Argentine Foreign Minister, will present a report to the Permanent Council of the Organization.
