Sixth Inter-American Meeting of
Electoral Management Bodies in Ottawa, Canada
June 21, 2009
OTTAWA, Sunday, June 21, 2009 — The Organization of American States (OAS), through its Department for Electoral Cooperation and Observation of the Secretariat for Political Affairs, and Elections Canada will hold the Sixth Inter-American Meeting of Electoral Management Bodies in Ottawa, Canada, on June 22 and 23.
The event will begin on Monday June 22, at 9:00 a.m., with opening remarks by OAS Secretary for Political Affairs, Ambassador Victor Rico; Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Mr. Marc Mayrand; Minister of State (Democratic Reform), Honourable Steven Fletcher; and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Americas), Honourable Peter Kent.
“The Inter-American Meetings of Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs) seek to promote the effective exchange of knowledge, experiences and best practices of electoral administration in the hemisphere. In particular, these meetings facilitate horizontal cooperation, to continuously strengthen national capacities and further improve the conduct of elections in the Americas,” said Mr. Ambassador Rico.
“The meeting will give us the opportunity to discuss common challenges and explore potential solutions. We will also look at best practices in hopes of learning some lessons that can assist us in our roles as administrators, and strengthen our bilateral relationships,” added Mr. Mayrand.
During this encounter, senior representatives of EMBs of the Americas will address three key issues related to strengthening electoral processes: the role of Electoral Management Bodies between elections, voter registries and international electoral observation. In this regard, they will be able to discuss the challenges of EMBs on wrapping-up electoral events, the importance of a reliable voter registry and the role of international electoral observation missions.
The opening session will be available by webcast on both the Elections Canada and the Organization of American States Web sites.
