OAS SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO CITIZENS
OF ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES
July 23, 2003
Eight more outstanding scholars from St. Vincent and the Grenadines have received funding for their academic studies from the Organization of American States.
Scholarships have recently been awarded to Neil Quow (BSc Management Sciences), Anthony Gaymes (BSc Business Management), Maxian Seales (MEng Engineering/Industrial Management), Vernette Ollivierre (MA Education), Dunstan Johnson (MSc Project Management), Colin Bacchus (MSc Instructional Technology), Raffique Barbour (MSc Applied Computer Science) and Keith Thomas (MSc Community Planning).
The total value of the scholarships is estimated at US$210,000. The scholars will pursue their studies at the University of the West Indies (Cave Hill and St. Augustine Campuses) and at universities in the USA, commencing later this year.
In addition to these new awards, the Organization has extended for an additional academic year, scholarships awarded in 2002 to Brennal Pierre (BSc Chemical Engineering), Daniel Thom (BSc Automotive Technology) and Shirla Francis (MSc International Relations).
OAS academic scholarships in St. Vincent and the Grenadines are offered under two rubrics.
- The traditional Self-Placed mechanism, where the student seeks admission to his/her university of choice and applies separately to the OAS for funding.
- The OAS-Placed mechanism, where the student applies to the OAS for a scholarship and, if selected, is placed by the OAS at an appropriate university that offers the level and program of studies desired, while providing the student with financial assistance.
OAS awards are also regularly offered to support the participation of Vincentian nationals in a wide range of professional development courses at educational institutions and training centers in OAS Member and Observer States and non-Member States. Three such scholarships have been awarded so far in 2003 in the areas of Education, Information Technology and Trade.
The OAS Scholarships Program is intended to support the study and training of outstanding individuals from the countries of the Americas, in order to fortify the disciplines and institutions most important to building a strong future for the Region.
