The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the general elections in Panama, headed by the former Foreign Minister of Argentina Susana Malcorra, began its deployment in the country on April 24th for the elections on Sunday, May 5.

The OAS Mission made up of 70 experts and observers from 19 countries analyzed issues related to electoral organization, electoral technology, electoral justice, political-electoral financing, political participation of women, participation of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples, and campaigns, media and communication.

During its work in Panama, the Mission met with government representatives, electoral authorities, leaders and candidates and representatives of civil society and academia, as well as members of the international community to learn about the ongoing electoral process. On election day, the Mission will be deployed throughout Panamanian territory, from the installation of the voting centers to the closing and transmission of results.

This was the twelfth time that the OAS has sent an electoral mission to Panama, and was possible thanks to the financial contributions of Brazil, Canada, South Korea, Spain, United States, Italy, Netherlands, Peru, Dominican Republic and Switzerland.
