OAS Electoral Observation Mission: 2024 Federal and Local Elections in Mexico

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the Local and Federal Elections in México, headed by the former Foreign Minister of Chile Heraldo Muñoz, began its deployment in the country on May 22nd, for the elections on Sunday, June 2.

The OAS Mission made up of 97 experts and observers from 24 countries analyzed issues related to electoral organization; voting abroad; electoral technology; electoral justice; political financing; political participation of women and indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples; political-electoral violence; and campaigns, media and digital communication.

During its work in Mexico, the Mission met with government representatives, electoral authorities, leaders and candidates and representatives of civil society and academia, as well as members of the international community to learn about the ongoing electoral process. On election day, the Mission was deployed throughout Mexican territory -and in 5 cities abroad (Dallas, Los Angeles, Madrid, Montreal and Washington, D.C.) to observe the voting abroad-, from the installation of the voting centers to the closing and transmission of results.

This was the seventh time that the OAS has sent an electoral mission to Mexico, and it was possible thanks to the financial contributions of Brazil, South Korea, Canada, Spain, the United States, France, Italy, the Netherlands, the Dominican Republic and Switzerland.
