The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the Presidential and Legislative elections in El Salvador, headed by former Vice President and former Foreign Minister of Panama, Isabel de Saint Malo, began its deployment in the country on January 25th for the elections on Sunday, February 4th.
The OAS Mission made up of 95 experts and observers from 20 countries analyzed issues including electoral organization; voting abroad; electoral technology; campaign finance; electoral justice; political participation of women; electoral violence; and campaigns, media, and digital communication. The Mission’s specialists also followed up on the recommendations issued by previous OAS Missions.
During its work in the country, the Mission met with government representatives, electoral authorities, leaders and candidates and representatives of civil society and academia, as well as members of the international community to learn about the ongoing electoral process. On election day, the Mission was present in in the 14 departments of the country, as well as in Barcelona, Spain; Guatemala City, Guatemala; Mexico City, Mexico, and Washington D.C., United States, from their installation to the counting, tallying, and transmission of the results.
This was the seventeenth (17) time that the OAS has sent an electoral mission in El Salvador, and it was possible thanks to the financial contributions of Canada, France, Italy, Panama, Peru, and the United States.
